"We must become the change we want to see" - Monhandas Gandhi
It is through the vision and perserverance of its Founders and the adherence to the purpose and principles established for its successful proliferation that Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. has grown from twelve men with a statement to over 12,000 men and 190 undergraduate and graduate/alumni chapters in its 35 plus years. And the fact remains, we are continuing to grow as an organization through the induction of new brothers and the formation of new colonies daily. Moreover, it was a strong belief in that statement of the original twelve that brought together the founders of FAMU Colony for a mission of change in the name of Iota Phi Theta. Under the guidance of Brother George A. Ishmael, six men set forth to become as beacons in the night bringing light to Florida A&&M University. On January 24, 1998 these men (Eddie L. Gray III, Ian D. Clark, Gregory L. Jones, Perry L. Marrow, Jr., Dhata R. Harris, and Michael J. Cunningham, collectively known as Southern Genesis) completed their maturation into men of Iota. Thus, the Fraternity was established on the campus and in the city of Tallahassee. Since laying the foundation, FAMU Colony has begun its growth. It has worked to further establish its reputation within the community through civic and campus involvement. These efforts have allowed the colony to begin crafting its own statement to echo that of the Fraternity's Founders. These efforts have allowed the chapter to expand its membership and reach heights sought by its charter line. On August 8, 1999 in Oakland, California during the 27th National Conclave of Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc., FAMU Colony acheived designation as a chapter within the fraternity. Now operating as GAMMA CHI (GX), the chapter intends to continue building its tradition at Florida A&M and within the city of Tallahassee. |
